Mission Statement
The Mobile County Training School library media program will enable individuals to become information literate and effective lifelong readers. The program will provide educational and technological opportunities to students and staff in keeping with their needs and abilities. The program will enable individuals to access, analyze, assimilate, and use information effectively.
Vision Statement
In collaboration with the school’s learning community, Alabama’s 21st Century library media programs will be the center of teaching and learning by providing access to quality collections and technologies and by extending services beyond the library media center’s four walls and the school day.
School Library Goals
1. To have knowledge of the curriculum taught at each grade level so relevant resources can be selected.
2. To provide an effective teaching and learning center that is an extension of the classroom for teachers and students.
3. To keep routines of circulation at a minimum so all use of resources is facilitated.
4. To encourage teachers to discuss curriculum objectives and suggest needed resources to implement the curriculum.
5. To inform teachers and students of new materials as received.
6. To cooperatively plan with teachers to integrate information skills into each curriculum area.
7. To encourage a love of reading, the appreciation of literature, and the continuing use of libraries for pleasure reading and lifelong learning.
8. To assume responsibility for orientation of all students to the policies and procedures of the media center.
9. To maintain adequate policies and procedures to assure both intellectual access to current information and ideas in all formats, including emerging information and instructional technologies.
10. To provide or assist in the preparation and presentation of learning experiences which enable students to acquire informational skills necessary to be lifelong learners.
Library Hours: Open Monday through Friday; 7:30-2:00
Students visit once every other week as assigned on the Library Schedule. Lessons are taught by the library media specialist based on the needs of the teachers, students, and curriculum. There is always a focus on information literacy and technology-based learning. These lessons are conducted during the regular library schedule and upon teacher request.
Students may check out two books per visit with their ID badge for a 2-week check-out period.
Teacher check-out is unlimited for library materials.
CLASS RESERVATIONS
Library reservations can be made any time in advance. Just email or visit Ms. Charbonnet to arrange. Please limit your reserved time to two days. Core classes doing required research or projects will have priority in making reservations.
Parents
Please encourage your child(ren) to read. The more they read the more they will know and the more they know the better they will do in school. Make it a point to know what your child's reading level and reading goals are. Reading is very important to your child and it takes practice, so make sure that they are reading every day. Remember it does not have to be just books, it can be newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes, or street signs. Be sure to visit your school library on Parenting Day and any PTO night. Reading is something that your child will do every day from now on.
Please feel free to stop by and become acquainted. You are also invited to browse our collection. You may find something you want to read. We have plenty of comfortable places to sit and enjoy literature or use the internet. Our Atrium search stations make it possible to find books and do research with ease. MCTS students know how to be prepared for research projects.
MCPSS LIBRARY MEDIA HANDBOOK
The Library Media Handbook contains all the library policies set by the MCPSS. A copy is available in the library for your use.
